As expected, the talented offenses of Dunham and Calvary Baptist started the scoring early in the state title game, with big-time recruit Braylon Huglon hauling in a 22 yard pass from Hudson Price in the games opening moments. Another top recruit, Elijah Haven, answered with touchdown scampers on the first 2 drives for the Dunham Tigers. After Price was intercepted on a long pass, Haven found Will Dantin for a 7 yard touchdown with 5 minutes left in the second quarter.
Dunham out gained Calvary by almost twice as many yards in the first half, but the Cavaliers were able to pull within 10 right before halftime with a 37 yard field goal by Ty Knight, which followed a Garrett Lee interception of Haven to set up Knight’s kick. Luke Miller completed a long pass and led the Cavs in tackles in the first half.
Similar to the first half, Dunham quickly got going to start the second half, and Haven took a shot in the direction of Jarvis Washington, and 77 yards later, the Tigers had extended their lead to three scores. The Cavs quickly answered with a QB run from a yard out, but Haven to Washington was called again in the third quarter, this time from 20 yards away. That made the score 34-17 in favor of Dunham, and that would prove to the final, as neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
Elijah Haven finished the game with 271 yards passing, 3 touchdowns, and only 8 incompletions. Jarvis Washington had 10 catches for 168 yards to help pace the Tigers. Braylon Huglon added 4 catches for 88 yards to lead Calvary.
We’ve got 62 guys who practice hard every day. We’ve got a group of coaches that really care about these kids. The way they’ve treated me and my family, I don’t need a championship to validate anything, but today is a special day to be a Dunham Tiger. – Dunham HC Neil Wiener
