This game was widely discussed in the press box as the potential to be the most unexciting game of the Prep Classic.
Ahem.
The Eagles of Archbishop Shaw made it all the way back to the Superdome to defend their title against the Comets of St. Charles Catholic, and the first play of the game was almost a touchdown on a long kickoff return. They worked their way down to the goal line and Skyler Edwards scored a rush TD from 2 yards out to put the Comets up first. That drive took up a good chunk of the first quarter, and after each team had a few three and out drives, the first quarter came and went while both teams set up the run game.
Shaw scored first in the second quarter, a 25 yard TD pass from Allen Shaw to Elliot Love, and that capped off an 8 play drive that took over half of the quarter to complete. With the game tied at 7, the Comets put together a similar drive, getting down towards the end of the half and getting a 7 yard TD pass from Landree Leblance to Gabriel Kugler. Another three and out from Shaw, and the halftime score was 14-7.
The Eagles opened the second half with another long drive and a QB rush TD from Allen Shaw from 7 yards. After getting the ball right back from SCC, Shaw took the first snap and went 81 yards up the left side for another TD, giving his team a 21-14 lead. The Comets only managed 21 yards of offense in the third quarter, and were trailing for the first time this season heading into the final quarter.
Shaw’s best drive in the fourth quarter ended in a missed field goal attempt after a successful pass play out of a fake punt. St. Charles had a drive going, but a tough interception off of a tipped ball lit up the Eagles sideline and gave them the ball and the lead down the stretch. But Shaw couldn’t get a first down, and that gave SCC a chance for an 11 play drive that went into the final minute, capped off by another short Skyler Edwards TD. The score was 21-20 in favor of Shaw with 35 seconds left.
St. Charles misses the extra point wide left, a rarity for Tyler Milioto. St. Charles has two timeouts left, and after using them and an unsportsmanlike penalty on Shaw to stop the clock, got a chance to block a punt. Which is exactly what they did, and after a short pass play to pick up a few yards, Milioto trotted back out and drilled a 44 yarder with 3 seconds left to give SCC a 23-20 lead. One play left fell short, and the Comets celebrated in front of a Superdome crowd that could hardly believe what they had just seen.
