Defending or not defending Champions?

Can HSM Head Coach David Perkins have another first district title in his second year as the head man? Perkins in his first year at the helm led his 2023 Holy Savior Menard Central High School football team to its first district (undefeated) championship in 13 years. Perkins Eagles squad finished the 2023 season 4-0 in district 4-2A and 7-3 overall. They went on to win the schools first playoff game in four years before losing to eventual undefeated Division III Select State Champion Calvary Baptist of Shreveport. In 2024, Perkins finds his team in a new district with some new teams.

This year’s Eagles don’t have to worry about defending last year’s title because the Eagles are now in district 5 class 2A. The five teams in the district consist of a few familiar faces (Avoyelles and Oakdale) and a couple new ones (Kinder & Point Barre).

The Eagles will host Avoyelles and Part Barre while they travel to Kinder and Oakdale. The Yellowjackets of Kinder are stepping down from district 3 (3A) to join the Eagles in district 5 (2A). The Yellowjackets were 6-5 and 2-3. Kinder is not the only district foe moving downing in classification. The Port Barre Red Devils are leaving district 4 (3A) where they went 5-6 and 3-3.

The non-district schedule is a good one. The Eagles will host Northwood, Abbeville and Church Point and travel to Jena, St. Mary’s and Buckeye (the Thursday night squirrel bowl is back),

HSM has to replace 13 seniors. The Eagles are looking to sophomore linebackers Sam Brocato, Branson Buller and others to fill the huge shoes of Cooper Scott. Senior Defensive lineman Asher Davis and others will pick up where Drake Aldredge left off.

Offensively, the Eagles have to replace leader Braylon Dusang on the line. Senior center Jack Roy and senior guard Ben Good lead a solid offensive line that will try to open running lanes for Aidyn Moran and Sam Brocato. Juniors Lane Evans and Aaron Brevelle and others join Roy and Good in protecting returning starting quarterback Jake Vaughn.

The team got their first taste of action against someone other than themselves Friday evening in a scrimmage against Rosepine. The Eagles looked strong and crisp during the final stage of the scrimmage a 12 minute quarter of play. They took the opening drive 70 yards for an 8-0 lead as they completed the two point conversion on an Asher Davis fullback run. The Eagles added a second TD and extra point kick by Mathew Hicks who steps into the kicking role vacated by his brother Ryan.

The Eagles defense looked just as strong in stopping Rosepine. The defense had multiple tackles for a loss and Mathew Hicks added an interception.

Head Coach David Perkins says “the Eagles still have a lot of work to do” before week one when they host the Northwood Gators. But, “there are reasons to be excited”. The team will have another chance to practice before the games count. The Eagles will take part in the jamboree at Tioga.

The jamboree will be live streamed by 446SPorts.com. Look for the HSM link or you’ll be able to click on the Tioga link. Your 446Sports HSM Eagle coverage team will not be live streaming but you’ll be able to get the unequaled insight from Eagle color analyst John Wolf who will be joining the Tioga team.
